Great Ocean Road’s new navy strength gin ‘Split Point’ is named after the famous local landmark, Split Point Lighthouse, that dominates the coastal landscape at Aireys Inlet.

The Split Point Lighthouse was built in 1891 after some ten shipwrecks occurred along the surf coast prior to 1890. Great Ocean Road Split Point Gin is a nod to seafarers past and present who have navigated this beautiful but rugged coastline.

Split Point Gin sits at 57% ABV and is packed with intense favour – citrus, juniper and local coastal botanicals including salt bush, hop wattle, local honey and kelp.

Like its lower ABV sibling (Great Ocean Road – Guvvos Gin), this is a well-balanced and complex gin, albeit exhibiting the intensity expected of a proof-level gin.  Neat, there’s a lovely, smooth viscosity that ensures a long finish; whilst a G&T brings out some of the more complex flavours such as coastal citrus and honey.

Serving suggestions:

• Like most navy strength gins, this gin is just made for some of those complex cocktails where you want to taste some gin with your cocktail. Think: negroni, martinez, or any of the lemon sour family.
• In a G&T, we suggest a 3:1 or even 4:1 ratio (to taste), served with a garnish of dried blood orange.

About Great Ocean Road Gin: 
In 2017 with her family in tow, Ann Houlihan decided to quit her job and make a sea change to Anglesea. With a long association with the Surf Coast as a regular weekender and holiday maker, she wanted to develop her own business making premium craft gin. Having worked in the Australian food and drink industry for over 20 years Ann wanted to be part of the thriving food scene on the Surf Coast.

The natural environment and rugged beauty of the Great Ocean Road are the inspiration for Ann’s artistic approach to the creation of her gin. Great Ocean Road Gin is a nostalgic nod to her favourite place in the world.  

The R&D and production of Great Ocean Road Gin takes place on a 180-litre copper pot Carl Still at a makers incubation hub in Melbourne called The Craft & Co.  Each month distiller Ann collects her botanicals, packs up her car and heads to Melbourne to produce and bottle Great Ocean Road Gin with the support of head distiller Sebastian Raeburn. Each process and every step is completed by hand with love and care.

Ann’s long-term plan is to establish and have her own beautiful still on the Great Ocean Road, whilst in the short-term (late 2018) plans to have a tasting room and gin garden at Aireys Inlet, a little coastal hamlet approximately 1.5 hours from Melbourne on the way to Lorne, along the world-famous Great Ocean Road.
